TRAVELERT: Krakow Concert and Event Alerts

Michael Zerang is one of the greatest jazz percussionists worldwide, equally well finding himself in band playing traditional jazz, free improv and traditional African and Asian music.

Michael Zarang will perform with Piotr Mełech and Ksawery Wójciński, two, young, polish improvisers. Th music of trio spans between jazz, free improv, contemporary music avantgarde.

Fisz Emade jako Tworzywo Sztuczne is a project of two brothers Bartek “Fisz” Waglewski (vocal, lyrics), and Piotr “Emade” Waglewski (music) supported usually by bunch of friends. On 20th February Błędne Koło will host Novika for one of her last concerts before her tour promoting newest album Lovefinder.

Kasia Nowicka aka Novika is a very active vocalist, dj, producer, radio dj and journalist. Collaborated with Futro, smolik, Fish and many other known on polish scene artists.

As a dj, she plays electro and deep hous, deep techno plus electronic dub, always looking for haunting melody.

Colorful, spiritual, very personal, electronic music of Longital guaranties quite memorable evening. Shina (vocal, bass guitar), Daniel (vocal, guitar, strings) and their electronic companion XI Di Nim (laptop electronica, loops, samples) will start adventurous, musical journey to unknown. Warm vocals and nifty electronic soundscapes will be your reward if you make it to Drukarnia in Podgórze at 8:00 pm on Sunday, the 7th of February. Don’t be alarmed or bolt for the exits if they produce a piano or a violin or other less electronic noisemakers, though. And their said to infuse their shows with a sense of humor.  No shortage of interesting (traditionally non-musical) objects may be employed by the band to stimulate the tiniest bones in your body — those found buried deep within your inner ears! Check their MySpace page for a sample of the Aural desert that this Polish / Ukranian band is whipping up for your enjoyment.

The Subs were formed in 1976 in London (as the Subversives) and their lineup has shifted in all the long years since then but they’re still doing what they do.  Rember their hits, including “Warhead”, “I live in a Car” and “Tomorrow’s Girls”?  I don’t either because I was 2 years short of being born, but if you were part of the punk in London at the time then you might.  A few of their songs weaseled their way into the UK’s top 40.

…And they’re performing together with The VIbrators, one of the 1st London Punk Bands to sprout like moss in the cool moist shadow of the Sex Pistols.  They released “We Vibrate” as their first single in 1976 and their first album which appeared a year later was Pure Mania and is proported to have been a classic.
So these two bands will be assembled for your perusal on Thursday, 4 February 2010 at 7:10 pm in Kwadrat, which is on ul. Piotra Skarżyńskiego 1.

If you visit the Pauza gallery (one floor above the pub on Floriańska) you can see photographer Katarzyna Widmańska’s photo series entitled, Alicja w Krainie Czarów inspired by Lewis Carrol’s book.  When reading Alice in Wonderland, did you find yourself wishing that it was kinkier, edgier, more grittily-realized, and populated almost entirely with steely-looking polish women?  If so, then this is the show you’ve been waiting for.  Experience this series of photos which render The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson’s fantasy world as a heavily-processed photographic style-piece.  On display in Pauza’s gallery until the 14th of February.

We invite you to ‘Food Not Bombs’ - Krakow on Saturday the 23rd of january at 2pm in Podgórze on Plac Niepodległości in Podgórze (beside Korona) starting at 2pm.

Food Not Bombs is an all-volunteer global movement that shares free vegetarian meals as a protest to war and poverty. Each chapter collects surplus food that would otherwise go to waste from grocery stores, bakeries and markets, then prepares community meals which are served for free to anyone who is hungry. The central beliefs of the group are:

• If governments and corporations around the world spent as much time and energy on feeding people as they do on war, no one would go hungry.
• There is enough food in the world to feed everyone, but too much of it goes to waste needlessly, as a direct result of capitalism and militarism.
• Vegan food is both healthy and nonviolent.

Food Not Bombs works to call attention to poverty and homelessness in society by sharing food in public places and facilitating gatherings of poor and homeless people. Anyone who wants to cook may cook, and anyone who wants to eat may eat. Food Not Bombs strives to include everyone.

Lo-fi, noise-pop, indie, awangarda, electro, psychedelia all could be applied to the music of Railcars. It should be appreciated by all amateurs pf such bands as Animal Collective, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, The Microphones or Parenthetical Girls.

Don’t Ask Smingus are happy to invite you to our first concert of 2010 and it’s a big one! As part of the Niepokorni concert series in Żaczek - Don’t Ask Smingus will open up for electronic Jazz heavy hitters Loco Star TOMORROW - Friday January 15th. Also performing will be Spytny Lisek and Peter Birch.

The Manchester University Music Society’s Chamber Choir Ad Solem (which means ‘towards the sun’ in Latin) will give two performances this week in Kraków.  The concerts will be on Tuesday 12 January at the Filharmonia starting at 19.30 and on Thursday 14 January at 19.00 at the Grand Hotel.  The program will include:

The Hollywood actor Barbara Apolonia Chalupiec was perhaps a Polish Femme Fatale. Probably you know her only as the film star Pola Negri famous above all from the 1910s to the 1930s in silent films. Just until Thursday 7th of January there is an exhibition right in the city center in the information and exhibitions hall Wyspianski Pavilion at Plac Wszystkich Świętych 2.

It will begin at 8:00 pm on the Market Square with DJs performance such as Raul Rincon, DJ ADHD and DJ Krime. After 11:00 pm the star of the evening is expected  Agnieszka Chylińska. Just before midnight the Mayor of Krakow will say a word and  spectacular firework display should following. Have fun.

Krakow municipality organizes a New Years run, it’s combined with fund rising for disabled children. If you want to take part go to Sienna st. to sing in 8am 11.30 am. For more info check Krakowski bieg Sylwestrowy
