The thing+ Ken Vandernark

15 Sep (mon)

>>The thing+ Ken Vandernark, concert, start:20:00
This Swedish-Norwegian band was founded in February 2000 during a series of concerts and recording sessions in Stockholm. The members are well known on jazz scene from the cooperation with Peter Brotzmann, Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee, Paul Lovensen or Barry Guy. The Thing, next to Atomic, is one of the most interesting improvising bands from Scandinavia. The style of The Thing comes from German, British and American tradition of 60s free jazz, considering especially Don Cherry’s productions (who lived in Stockholm for several years). All the records of The Thing (The Thing, Action Jazz, Live At Bla, Garage, The Thing with Joe McPhee and Cato Salsa Experience – Sounds Like A Sandwich, Two Bands And A Legend and I See You Baby) received great reviews. “All About Jazz” has written: “… the concerts of those three great improvisers are a unique mix of tradition, avant-garde, energy and madness. As a result we receive a dose of an amazing music that won’t let anybody be indifferent.”/after:alchemia.com.pl/

New Century Classics – Muzyczna Owczarnia

13. September

>>New Century Classics – Muzyczna Owczarnia
First off, if you aren’t familiar with this cult music venue tucked away in a sheep barn at the edge of Poland – then this is a golden opportunity for you to come check it out. Located just an hour and a half south of Krakow in the village of Jaworki (just past Szczawnica), Muzyczna Owczarnia is a truly magical place with a flair for the eccentric. They opened their doors 8 years ago and immediately set a bold mission of bringing some of the best Polish and International performers to their cozy stage. Nigel Kennedy, of all people, has notoriously has fallen in love with the place and performs here regularly (over 20 concerts to date). In keeping with the creative spirit of the place, they often host up and coming young Polish bands– hence this evenings concert which features Krakow’s New Century Classics and Eluktrick. NCC is an instrumental post rock group whose compositions are as strikingly beautiful as they are emotionally eviscerating. Their energy, intensity, poise and sheer musical diversity (each member plays at least 2 and up to 5 different instruments over the course of a set) is both entertaining and intoxicating. NCC have collaborated with the more indie rocking Eluktrick in the past so expect an evening filled with surprises (and amps cranked loud enough for the sheep to hear). If you are curious how to get to the gig, contact eluktrick@gmail.com (a bus is being chartered from Krakow).
