Minimal Break

10. September

>>Minimal Break
Keeping with their ever-evolving conceptual ethos, Folia offers a unique evening of dynamic action and minimal satisfaction. The evening kicks off with a b-boy bang at 18:00 with an interactive breakdance workshop. Folia’s own in house breakdance instructor schools both beginners and amateur head spinners in how to execute simple and complex moves. The climate is straight out of Brooklyn with a ghettoblaster stereo pumping the tunes and a crowd of b-boys and girls cheering along. The night takes a drastic turn when the sun goes down and Djs S.T. R. U Kako Fonix Poler Pi take to the turntables at 21:00 to usher in an evening of Minimal techno. The experienced Krakow Dj’s perform individually as well as in different combos to collectively shower listeners with slow moving waves of the newest minimal grooves and progressive soundscapes, that crash late into the night. If you can’t make it to Folia for one or both of these innovative events, don’t fret because both happen every Tuesday (the breakdance workshop also works on Mondays).

Jeff Lewis in Krakow

1st of Sept (Mo)

>>Jeff Lewis, cocnert,start:20:00
Coming fresh off of touring with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, poetic anti-folk rocker Jeffrey Lewis and his band bring their eclectic crassy sound to the stage of Krakow’s Re. Jeff was born and raised in New York City and grew up playing music and drawing comic books. He was signed by UK label Rough Trade in 2001 and has released 4 albums to date. His most recent album was released in October 2007 and was entitled 12 Crass Songs and the album consisted entierely of cover versions of British punk band Crass. And exactly what the hell is anti-Folk anyways… well it started as an actual movement in New York City in the mid 1980s but over time has sort of lost its meaning. Now it is used to describe artists that have some elements of folkmusic but also do other crazy shit as well (think early Beck). Jeff describes his own music as “sounding a bit like if Woody Guthrie fronted Sonic Youth” and he often includes video and his own art installations into his concerts. The Jeffrey Lewis Band features Jeff on vocals and guitar, his brother Jack on bass and David Beauchamp on drums. Although they are often looped into thos anti-folk bracket, they also dable in psychadelia, punk (art and post), folk, and garage rock to name a few. Don’t come to Re with any expectations except to see a truly unique artist and experience something different. Who knows, you may just have your mind blown.
