Harlem Gospel Choir
It’s that time of year again when the Harlem Gospel Choir make their way back to Poland for a series of concerts. Although it certainly isn’t a first that this talented ensemble isn’t in Poland there are few other touring Gospel acts in the world that can compare with the HGC. If you still aren’t convinced then consider the fact that they have performed for Pope John Paul II, Nelson Mandella and Elton John (in that order) and performed with artists such as U2, Gorillaz and the Chieftans. Just in time for Christmas, the Harlem Gospel Choir will put you in the holiday spirit like no other event this month.

not
Why? Because this is “not” just a side project but that’s just how it worked out since two of the founding members are also part of the Cool Kids of Death indie rock machine. So what exactly are Marcin “Cinass” Kowalski and Kuba “qbx” Wandachowicz doing in another band you might ask and the answer is playing playing intriguing industrial rock with another veteran of Polish rock – Robert Tuta (Aggressiva 69, Malenczuk Tuta Rutkowski Super Trio, 1984). If the band hadn’t been formed in 1999 it could easily be called some sort of super group but it’s just “not”… and the music very much stands on its own and not the shoulders of its already famous members. The group’s dark, dirty and industrial sound is curiously balanced with Wandachowicz’s some times hauntingly introspective, some times playfully quirky lyrics. The group will be supported by another favorite of the Polish (not Korean) Indie rock scene – NELL making this a concert to mark on your concert calendar.

Aquasky
As part of the second part of the second night of the IDA (international DJ association) World DJ Championships in Poland, Klub Pauza welcomes UK Breakbeat Dj collective AQUASKY as well as the world famous Ragga Twins Jungle MCs. It seems the IDA has fallen in love with Poland recently as this is the second year in a row that the finals have been held here. Last year the finals were actually held in Krakow but this year Warsaw will do the honors. Krakow will host the after-after party a day later with the winners doing a victory lap in the swanky Pauza basement alongside the UK headliners. Aquasky is a breaks and jungle group comprised of Dave Wallace, Kieron Bailey & Brent Newitt who have been producing their own music since 1995. While they started off primarily making Drum & Bass tracks they moved on to become world renowned Break-Beat gurus. The trio are also responsible for creating and running the Passenger label established in 1997 (as well as its sister label 777 established in 2004). Perfoming with them is the legendary Ragga Twins (Flinty Badman & Deman Rockers) who have been recording reggae, dancehall, jungle, drum & bass hip hop and even jazz tracks for over 25 years. They have recently collaborated with Aquasky on some breakbeat tracks including the IDA 2008 World Championship promotional track and video that you can see and hear on www.myspace.com/idaworld. So if you are in the mood for some serious in your face world class turntablism, take a pause and head to Pauza.

Anthony Braxton
As one of the last concerts in the Krakowska Jesień Jazzowa 2008, Alchemia and Manggha present the Anthony Braxton Septet. For those of you not in the know, Braxton is one of the most prolific and accomplished Jazz musicians of the last fifty years. He is primarily known as a flute and saxophonist but he has also notably utilized some of the stranger horns in the woodwind family such as the C-Melody, F alto, E-flat alto, baritone, bass, and contra bass saxophones; and the E-flat, B-flat, and contra bassclarinets. But more important than the instruments is what he does with them. Having recorded more than 100 albums since the 1960′s Braxton has constantly tried to push the boundaries of music and even though he has been labled a jazz musician – much of his music fits in more with more experimental forms such as contemporary classical, extend technique ambient and even electronic music. More recently he has expanded his musical vision by writing an Opera, and composing numerous pieces fo his 50 plus member tricentric ensemble that includes vocalists as well as visual artists. Besides being a world renowned groundbreaking musician Braxton is also a professor of music, an author, and philospher. Whatever music Braxton decides to bring to Manggha you are sure to be thoroughly enthralled if not a bit challenged.
