Leopold Kozłowski & friends

kozlowski

He has been called “the last klezmer of Galicia” and “the treasure of Kazimierz.” This pianist, composer, and conductor is the last prewar klezmer living in Poland. He is the grandson of Pejsach Brandwein, who, with his dozen musical sons, founded the most famous klezmer band in Galicia. One of Kozlowski’s uncles is the clarinetist Naftule Brandwein, regarded in America as the “king of klezmer.”
During this year’s concert at the Tempel synagogue, Leopold Kozłowski will be accompanied by his Friends Jacek Cygan, Katarzyna Jamróz, Renata Świerczyńska, Kamila Klimczak, Marta Bizoń, Andrzej Róg, Jacek Hołubowski, and Halina Jarczyk.

19th Jewish Culture Festival – Balkan Beat Box, Daniel Kahn et al. – Kazimierz

jewish-festival

Every summer Kazimierz hosts the Jewish Culture Festival that
celebrates traditional and modern Jewish culture through concerts,
films, workshops and exhibitions. This year’s festival is the 19th
installment and of course is the biggest and best so far and starts on
June 27th and lasts until July 5th.  Every day is filled with all
kinds of events and activities but the real highlights are the
concerts that happen on every corner and any time of day.   Paul Brody
and Danial Kahn will be leading the Alchemia Klezmer jams which go on
through out the festival and stretch late into the night. One of the
biggest artists taking the ul. Szeroka main stage are Balkan Beat Box.
They are a uniqe project and fuse the musical styles of Jewish
klezmer, Mediterranean and Balkan traditions with hip-hop and
dancehall beats.  Other notable acts at this year’s festival are
Krakow’s own Kroke, Emil Zrihan Ensemble (Izrael), Fretwork (UK), Kobi
Israelite Ensemble (USA) and many others.  For a full list of events
and concerts check out  www.jewishfestival.pl. This is the biggest
festival of Jewish Culture in all of Europe and also one of the
biggest parties in Krakow. Don’t miss it.

Jazz Klezz Sessions hosted by Paul Brody

poul-brody

During five nights Paul Brody will become a master of ceremony on alchemical crucible, where jazz and klezmer music will mix up giving a chance to spontaneous, live experiments and improvisation.

Klezmer tunes will be the heart and jazz the soul of this music, which will easily follow into free and groovy directions.

Jazz klezz

Paul Brody and other musicians invited to the project.

„As a MC I will have the possibility to play with Sun Ra style adding a certain amount of it into some compositions, directing the group improvisation spontaneously giving the musicians the signal when to start and when to leave the stage. This should enrich the performance with all kinds of stylistics and musical tastes and also make the night much more interesting.“
