2010 Jewish Culture Festiwal

visit the Jewish Culture Fest website

Every year since 1988 Kraków has hosted a festival of Jewish culture centered in Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter of the city. From Saturday, the 26th of June until Sunday, the 4th of July you can find daily events including workshops for topics such as Hasidic dance and song, klezmology, Hebrew calligraphy, Jewish paper cutting and cooking. And of course concerts — lots of concerts. Last year’s grand finale concert (to give you an idea of the scale) had and audience of 13,000. This year the festival will feature dozens of performers and thousands of participants from all over the world. Check the events schedule on the festival website to see what’s happening.

Dragon Parade Day!

read about the Wawel Dragon Parade

If you happened to be out today in the Planty (the thin strip of green park that runs around the city) you might have noticed lots of kids dressed as a giant dragon. They are part of a theatrical celebration of the Wawel Dragon. If you missed the parade on Satuday afternoon you can still catch the outdoor night show at 21.45 at the bend of the Wisła river near the Wawel castle. On Sunday, June 7th there is a family picnic near the feet of the dragon statue between the castle and the river, going from 10-19.00.

selector festival

Krakow is hosting the 2rd annual Selector Festival on 4 and 5 June. Last year they were in the big field at Błonia, but this year they have moved somewhere else due to fear of flooding. But what’s a festival without mud? They offer free shuttles to the new venue (in the old Kraków airport — a really cool place). Check their website to watch them build the tents or to see which bands are performing. Last years was ultra-modern and clean and corporate, and well-organized.
