Spring Typography

forsythia + typography

Spotted near the hostel in Krakow: this specimen of fresh spring letters. Note that they haven’t grown their serifs yet (it’s still early) but the bars and stems are thick and healthy. If they can firm and fatten up in the Summer months, they’ll surely make it through next winter’s hardship.

Do not be alarmed by agressive white flakes falling from Cracow skies.

On closer examination, they are only water in a solid state. They will not harm you unless you stay outside too long. It’s warm in the hostel. You may seek shelter here. Flake buildup on pavements may cause gravitational irregularities, so walk carefully. Make sure to swallow enough warm fluids before going out.

Thursday dinner

As almost every week we make a free dinner for our guests (actually not only for guests, but as well for hostel friends, friends of guests and friends of friends).

This week spicy soup will warm us up.

Starts at 8 pm, everybody are welcome;)

The exhibition (called The Grey Empire) will be on display until the 30th of May, and it documents the Polish photographer’s Chinese adventures. While you’re there checking out the photography, be sure to taste the green tea ice cream…

A Novel to learn about history

The historical novel ‘Fatherland’ written by British bestseller author Robert Harris provides absorbing background information related to the Second Worldwar. One of the worst Nazis Hans Frank, Odilo Globocnik, Josef Buhler, who all played a role in the ‘Generalgouvernement’ of the occupied Poland, also play a role in the novel.

Easter in Krakow

23-24 Mar

Besides Misteria Paschalia festival there won’t be much happening in Krakow. The rhythm on the town will be changed completely. Empty streets, most of the venues and all of the shops will be closed on the Easter Sunday and most likely on Monday as well so you should make a supply. One might be interested in joining people who attend Easter Masses they usually start at 6am. On Monday don’t be surprised if you’d seen pouring water in each other on the streets, it is an old Polish custom….it is called Śmingus Dingus beware.

Muddy friday tour

Of course this title is not really encouraging but the fact is that the tour in Krakow this friday has been muddy. No rain during the walk but quite enough the night before to make the path to the kopiec really sticky because of the mud. But… but… from there, in spite of the cloudy sky, we have seen the Tatras mountains far away in a pink sky. Wahoo…

Tatras mountains from Krakow

Yes, you can see the mountains very, very far away. I swear. As usual, between the cafe and the polish milky bar “bar mleczny” my guests chose the latter for the polish experience. As usual it was good, cheap and polish. We couldn’t miss the picture with the dragon so we did it. Same with the hot chocolate (or the beer).

French speaking evening ?

A lot of french speaking people were present in the hostel yesterday for the dinner but not only : travelers from all over the world : Switzerland, Brasil, Georgia, Poland, France, Australia, Belgium and Germany. So we also try to speak english and spanish. The story of the Krakow’s dragon was a new and strange experience for me. The barszcz was one of the best I’ve done, thanks to the help I had to peel and cut all the vegetables… (here the link to the recipe)

shisha

The shisha had problems to start but seems to have worked finaly.

More pictures of the party in the galleries. I can send you some in good resolution if you want.

shisha party

Dear Guests…

I remind you that tonight I will cook for you at the hostel in Sarego street. It should be a good occasion to meet each other and eat something good (hope so). Rendez-vous : 20.00 pm at the hostel.

If you’re interested by going with me to the open air market place called “Kleparz” where I buy the food and where you can find some cheap polish “things” (mostly food and clothes new or used) we can meet at 14.00 at the hostel Sarego.

Important : I’ll try to bring with me my shisha water pipe so we can experience some turkish fruit tobacco after dinner.

Reception and cooking

This is how the reception looks like when the cook is working here…

Walking in the wind

Has been a great time once again to go walking with our guests. Spring was here when getting out of the hostel (some of us, used to better temperatures didn’t agree with what I called ‘spring’). Very confident, we decided to reach Kopiec Krakusa but the wind and the rain decided that we could not. So we ended in a “Kawaciarnia” in Podgorze. After a good, but not so long, coffee we went out to finish our walk. It has been a special ‘Polish Heroes’ afternoon. After crossing the Piłsudkiego bridge we went to the grave of many polish writer and paintors in Skałka, where Saint Stanisław is supposed to have been cut in pieces by the King Bolesłas (but that’s another story…).

faithfull dog Dżok

We finaly had a look at the monument dedicated to this other hero of the city : ‘Dzok’, the incredibly faithful dog that stayed a whole year in the same place, waiting for his master to come back, unfortunately, the latest was dead. Finaly, I had to admit that it was still wintertime…

The cook is back in Kraków

Cześć !

The cook is back from France. That means two important things :

- the free dinner for our guests will take place at the hostel on thursday night at 8 pm.  For those who would like to experience a real polish open air market, meet at 2 pm in Hostel ul. Sarego.

- there will be a walking tour around Kraków organised on friday if the weather is not too… wet. Meeting at 12.00 in Plac Na Groblach.
