If you’re suffering from burning palms, yellowed skin, mysterious rashes or if you keep waking up in the middle of the night screaming for no particular reason, you might not be getting enough free jazz in your diet. The first step to recovery might be to visit the freshly formed Valentine Trio this Thursday evening. They’ll mix covers from artists as diverse as Sun Ra, Syd Barrett and Cat Power for an emotionally experimental evening.

The concert is at Alchemia (in Kazimierz) on Thursday, 12 November starting at 20:00.

Tickets are 30 Złoty at the door and 25 Złoty in advance.

Concert; Pit er Pat (US, Thrill Jockey)

Pit Er Pat is not your typical indie band and they don’t play typical indie music.  In fact the band doesn’t truly fit into any genre which is usually a good starting point for any music worth listening to.  The group is made up of Fay Davis-Jeffers (vocals, piano, guitar, kalimba), Rob Doran (bass, vocals, guitar, electronics) and Butchy Fuego (drums, vocals, percussion, electronics/programming) and they see themselves as more modern musicians playing modern music. Their musical focus remains firmly grounded in rhythm, while incorporating a strong sense of melody and harmony to dance above the complex rhythms and to stretch the layers to lofty heights.  The group has only been together since 2004 but has already released 3 records and 2 EPs for Thrill Jockey (NYC) which is one of the most progressive and interesting independent labels in the states featuring other groups such as Tortoise, The Sea and Cake, Trans Am, Mouse on Mars and David Byrne. Unlike other labels they encourage their artists to push the envelope and push the boundaries of their art rather than conform to any preconcieved notions of pop or rock formats.  Pit er Pat have taken that freedom and run with it.  Don’t miss this unique concert experience in Krakow’s most intimate stage.

Peter Jacquemyn is not only a great double bass player but also a sculptor, graphic and performer. He belongs to the most creative artists on Belgium improvised music scene. He was first a student, then a music parter of the master of double bass – Peter Kowald. He constantly performs and records with such artists as: Fred Van Hove, Conrad Bauer, Wolfgang Fuchs, Michael Moore, Ernst Reysegger, Barre Phillips, Paul Rutherford, Tony Oxley, Terry Ex, Assif Tsahar. Jacquemyn toured in Poland in 2007 with Kris Wanders Quartet, also joined international project of Mikolaj Trzaska.

Wilbert de Joode – Dutch double bass player, has been active on European improvised music scene since 1982. He performs and records with: Ab Baars, Misha Mengelberg, Han Bennink, Frank Gratkowski, Ken Vandermark. His own style, inborn musicality and great imagination makes him a very valuable musician often invited to many projects.

Clayton Thomas – Australian double bass player; lives in Berlin. His first teachers were Wilber Morris and Peter Kowald. Thomas is a hard working musician, his most interesting projects are: AUS Trio with Johannes Bauer and Tony Buck, c.o.d.e. quartet with Ken Vandermark, Max Nagel and Wolfgang Reisinger, and the latest one with Michael Zerang and Mikolaj Trzaska. /after alchemia.com.pl

The brothers Marcin and Bartłomiej Brother Oleś are one of the most creative artists on Polish jazz music scene.
They are the founders and creators of nonexistent band Custom Trio – one of the most interesting accustic jazz bands in Poland.

Peter Brötzmann – has been active on jazz scene since 1959. His trio with Peter Kowald and Sven-Ake Johansson founded in 1964 was free jazz forerunner in Europe. He has been cooperating from early 70s with such musicians as: Sonny Sharrock, Bill Laswell, Don Cherry, Anthony Braxton or Tomasz Stanko. Brotzmann is on of the founder of legendary label FMP. He leads several very interesting projects, meanly with Scandinavian and Chicagoan musicians (Chicago Tentet, Dried Rat-Dog, Sonore).
Paal Nilssen-Love – he has been active musician from 1990, first on Norwegian, then on European and American jazz scene. He constantly cooperates with such artists and bands as: Atomic, School Days, The Thing, Frode Gjerstad Trio, Sten Sandell Trio, Scorch Trio, Territory Band, FME and also performs and records in duos (with e.g. Ken Vandermark, John Butcher, Mats Gustafsson).  /after alechemia,com.pl

This trio of young and talented musicians published their first album in 2008 and immediately amazed the critics and listeners.
Wacław Zimpel – a clarinet, bass clarinet player and composer.
Robert Rasz – a drummer; he studies on Music Academy in Katowice (Poland).
Wojciech Traczyk – a double bass player.
Aram Shelton – lives in California; a composer, saxophonist and clarinet player. Shelton performs with the biggest on improvised scene in USA: Ken Vandermark, Steve Bernstein, Rob Mazurek, Fred Frith, Guillermo Gregorio or Jon Raskin.

Konqistador mastered their musicians skills in Detroit, for the time being that live in Toronto but often travel to Istambuł. Wherever they they go the place has an impact on their music. Right now they promote the newest record called Electriker.

They say that Atomic is one of the best Scandinavian free jazz bands. Represents modern version of “power jazz” Three Norwegians – Wiik, Hĺker Flaten and Nilssen-Love and two Swedish – Ljungkvist and Broo have been performing together since mid 90s.

Two members of the group are already well known to Polish fans. Jason Stein, bass clarinet virtuoso, performed in Poland with Ken Vandermark’s Bridge 61; Jason Roebke with Fred Lonberg-Holm, Mike Reed and Jeb Bishop. Mike Pride, as the only one, had never been to Poland before but the jazz lovers had already a chance to listen to him with Tony Malaby and William Parker on the record called Scrambler. This Swedish-Norwegian band was founded in February 2000 during a series of concerts and recording sessions in Stockholm. The members are well known on jazz scene from the cooperation with Peter Brotzmann, Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee, Paul Lovensen or Barry Guy. The Thing, next to Atomic, is one of the most interesting improvising bands from Scandinavia. The style of The Thing comes from German, British and American tradition of 60s free jazz, considering especially Don Cherry’s productions (who lived in Stockholm for several years). All the records of The Thing (The Thing, Action Jazz, Live At Bla, Garage, The Thing with Joe McPhee and Cato Salsa Experience – Sounds Like A Sandwich, Two Bands And A Legend and I See You Baby) received great reviews. “All About Jazz” has written: “… the concerts of those three great improvisers are a unique mix of tradition, avant-garde, energy and madness. Kondo changes his home again in 80s, this time he moves to Amsterdam where he cooperates with: Praxis band, Eugen Chadbourn, Tom Cora and Peter Brotzmann.
Massimo Pupillo
Leading Italian free jazz and avant rock musician. He is a member of cult band ZU; Pupillo records and performs with: Ken Vandermark, Mats Gustafsson, Jeb Bishop, Peter Brotzmann among others.
Paal Nilssen-Love

A poetic dialogue with one of the most important documentary movies about Israel. Cinematic clash of two visions of Israel from the begining of its existance and contemporary movie picture.
A cinematic journey to the recesses of the photographed memory in Chris Marker’s 1960 impressionist film about Israel, ”Description d’un combat” (Description of a Struggle), which won the Golden Bear at the 1961 Berlin Festival. Dan Geva creates a poetic and philosophic cinematic dialogue with the original text. Geva takes us to places that Marker warned about half a century earlier and to those which the French master could not even have imagined. The present film goes into the innermost parts of the original and places Israel’s present as a future to Marker’s prophecy.
