Unsound – FUTURE SHOCK

From introduction: “This year’s theme of the festiwal is borrowed from the prophetic and best-selling 1970 book by Alvin Toffler, which described the disorienting effects of accelerated technological and social change. Confronted with an unprecedented sense of iformation overload, many artists reach bockward, side-ways and forward to re-imagine the future from the vantage point of the past , filtered through the present via outmoded technologies or disjointed contexts”

During one week (8.10- 16.10) you have a chance attend concerts, workshops, installations and movies. Let’s experience and try to ask ourselves about the future.

2010 Jewish Culture Festiwal

visit the Jewish Culture Fest website

Every year since 1988 Kraków has hosted a festival of Jewish culture centered in Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter of the city. From Saturday, the 26th of June until Sunday, the 4th of July you can find daily events including workshops for topics such as Hasidic dance and song, klezmology, Hebrew calligraphy, Jewish paper cutting and cooking. And of course concerts — lots of concerts. Last year’s grand finale concert (to give you an idea of the scale) had and audience of 13,000. This year the festival will feature dozens of performers and thousands of participants from all over the world. Check the events schedule on the festival website to see what’s happening.

selector festival

visit the selector 2010 website

Krakow is hosting the 2rd annual Selector Festival on 4 and 5 June. Last year they were in the big field at Błonia, but this year they have moved somewhere else due to fear of flooding. But what’s a festival without mud? They offer free shuttles to the new venue (in the old Kraków airport — a really cool place). Check their website to watch them build the tents or to see which bands are performing. Last years was ultra-modern and clean and corporate, and well-organized.

Kraków Tango Festival 2010

image from packer105 via Flickr

From 30 April to 2 May Kraków will see 3 nights of dancing, 3 days of workshops and 3 master dancing pairs from Buenos Aires. The festival venues are over the city, one of which is on Platform 1 of the main train station. You can check the festival webpage for more information and an event schedule, and also for a list of swanky hotels around the city for Tango enthusiasts who are arriving from all across Europe just to attend the festival.

2nd Annual Divine Comedy Theatre Festival

little-dude-with-torch

Surely by this time you’ve spied this endearing little fire-bearing sasquatch on posters around town.  Do not fear him!  For he comes in peace.  He’s for the 2nd annual Boska Komedia festival which is going on from 7 to 14 December.  It’s an international theatre festival, but the plays are only in Polish — some of the best ones of the last year.  Check their snazzy-looking website for the schedule; there is a lot of good theatre coming up in the next few days.  Hurry up, though, as tickets are in short supply.

The 5th Festival of Polish Music

teatr_slowackiego_barokowe_loze1

There are a smattering of events from November 7 – 27 in various venues — including the resplendant Teatr. Słowackiego (shown above). Unlike other recent music festivals in Kraków, this festival isn’t centered around one composer, but brings a variety of world-famous performers and ensembles together to play a variety of Polish music. Interpretations will hopefully showcase the enchanting power of Poland’s musical heritage for all of Earth’s humans.

zbigniew-seifert

On November 5 – 7 there will be a musical celebration of the late and legendary jazz violinist Zbigniew Seifert. Check the website for a list of concerts with his colloborators, friends and admirers. A Kraków native, Seifert was a jazz giant when he died of cancer at 32. During his career he collaborating with Kryztow Komeda and other heroes of Polish (and nonpolish) jazz.
