Free “Jewish Soul” Concert
Shanties!
Stary Port, as Krakow’s oldest (and only) “sailor bar” is a good place most of the year to hear old sailor songs sung by old sailors. In late February, though (for thirty years now!) there is a sailing song (or Shanty) festival. This year it takes place from 22 to 27 February, with concerts in Stary Port itself and also at as other venues.
Free Moral Agents in Kraków (Tonight!)
See Isaiah “Ikey” Owens from The Mars Volta playing with Free Moral Agents on the 2nd of March at Klub Re in Krakow! You can read Spin’s short review of their record here, or check out a sample of their music here on YouTube or their MySpace page.
The concert is 35 PLN in advance or 45 PLN at the door.
Doors open at 20.00.
Slightly Pretentious Jazz Tonight!
Tonight at the Manggha center at 21.00 you can see this band and hear their stormy, brooding sound. The band is called the Contemporary Noise Quintet — they are polish but well known beyond this country.
Tricky in Kraków!
Tricky (from Massive Attack, and of course other things) will be in Kraków on Friday, 5 November. The show starts at 20.00 Tickets are 120 PLN the day of the concert because, yes, Tricky is well-known. The concert will be at Fabryka Club in Podgórze, on ul. Zabłocie number 23. He has been here before — at least once, in 2008. It seems that November is Tricky’s preferred time of the year to visit Kraków.

Polvo hit poland like so much recently-thawed octopus
Can we call their music “noisy?” Yes! Challenging, troubling even! The bundles of neurons which try to make sense of auditory impulses before sending them to your brain will be confused! Try them out for yourself, but grab hold of the desk first to steady yourself. They’re from the US — Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where they formed in 1990. They carry the flag of the “math rock” people, I am told, but the band themselves dislike this category. They sound so weird you might at first think they’ve mistuned their guitars.
Wrap them around your face or maybe wear them as a hat on Tuesday, 1 May at 20.00 at Forty Kleparz. Ed Wood (the band, not the deceased filmmaker) is opening for them. Admission is 45 PLN, unless you plan ahead.
“The Sunday Sessions” perform on Friday
Yes, despite the name, catch them on Saturday, 21 May at 20.00 at Śródmiejski Ośrodek Kultury (located on Mikołajska street in the old city center, number 2). “The Sunday Sessions” are a local songwriting collective consisting of “seven or so” members from Ireland, South Africa, Poland, Scotland and Germany. After hiding away somewhere for a while to write songs, they have just recently emerged into public to perform music they describe as “folky-acoustic.” They are known to swap instruments and singing duties during their performances. A warm but lively evening is guaranteed. And since they’re a brand new band (but a good one) hurry to catch what will surely be one of their last free shows . . .
