TRAVELERT: Krakow Concert and Event Alerts

Stand back!  The dim, tiny and infinitely smoky Naukowa in Kazimierz will host USA’s EAR PWR on Sunday, 22 November.  The concert starts at 19.00.  It might actually be the exact opposite of the Monday English Meditation that starts at the same time the following day — at the Buddhist center on Augustiańska there’s still, silent focussed reflection and the delicate scent of incense and the wood floors.  At the EAR PWR concert you’ll sink your teeth into synthesizers that at times can sound like crazed but competent squirrels got into your Nintendo (the one from 1987), and these squirrels might enjoy listening to The Knife sometimes on their downtime.  Meditation offers tea and clarity; the EAR PWR show has beer and irresistible rhythmic movement and could be an awful lot of fun.  So why not do both?  24 hours might just be enough to recover from EAR PWR.

Grabaż Grabowski and Kozak Kozakiewicz of Pidżama Porno formed Strachy Na Lachy (which means “The Empty Threats”) in 2003 because they wanted to play some less aggressive music than the scorching punk they were better known for. Now it’s 2009 and Pidżama Porno is no more (alas!) but Strachy Na Lachy is still pulsing with life and will be playing this Friday (the 13th!) in Klub Studio on ul. Budryka no. 4. The concert starts at 20:00. And!  As a special feature of the evening, you can get an actual band member to punch you in the mouth for a mere extra 5 PLN.

Quite startling and original blend of college rock, post punk and indie rock.Their first album “take-off”, that will be presented during concert, is a compilation of 13 melodic songs which combine a dynamic rhythmic section, noisy guitars, strong vocals and energetic raw songs. Renton experiments with different music moods, at the same time stylistically remaining within the convention of genuine guitar play, rooted in tradition of the Beatels’ pop songs.

100nka (read:stonka) plays music, that is difficult to label,it is not entirely jazz nor rock, and for sure it is not jazz -rock. It is actually stylistic mosaic of rock, jazz, groove, even folk or funk. Special attention deserves guitar here, unconventional, moving from different moods and guitar effect – makes 100nka sound surprising and fresh.
